Fremont councilwoman hosts free screening of "Bully"
By Shannon Barry
This year, more than 13 million American kids will be bullied at school, online, on the bus, at home, through their cell phones and on the streets of their towns, making it the most common form of violence young people in this country experience.
The magnitude and raw emotion of this issue came to life on the big screen for 280 people who joined to watch Lee Hirsch's award-winning documentary "Bully" Aug. 29 at the newly opened Century Theatres at Pacific Commons.
"I am quite pleased at the turnout, which exceeded our expectations," Councilwoman Sue Chan said following the private screening that brought together stakeholders from across Fremont to experience the magnitude of a universal issue that has affected her own life.

Congressmember Judy Chu Endorses Sue's Re-Election Bid
I am thrilled to announce the endorsement of Congressmember Judy Chu, who joins fellow Congressman Mike Honda, State Controller John Chiang, Board of Equalization Member Betty Yee, Assemblymembers Paul Fong, Mary Hayashi, and Fiona Ma, and many other community leaders in backing my re-election and my strong track record of good work on the City Council.
The support of Congressmember Chu is a great honor. Her endorsement adds to our strong list of state and local elected officials.
Representative Chu was first elected to Congress in July 2009 to represent the 32nd District. She serves on the House Judiciary Committee, where she is a member of the Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security and the Intellectual Property, Competition, and the Internet subcommittees. She is also a member of the House Small Business Committee, where she is leading the Contracting and Workforce Subcommittee as the Ranking Democrat and serves on the Economic Growth, Tax and Capital Access and Agriculture, Energy and Trade Subcommittees. In 2011, she was elected as the Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC).
“Sue is just the type of Councilmember cities in California need, hard working and truly invested in the community she serves,” states Representative Chu. “I am happy to support her re-election.”
Congressmember Judy Chu served as a Councilmember in Monterey Park, she understand first hand the duties and responsibilities of the Office. To have the endorsement of the first Chinese American Congressmember is truly an overwhelming privilege.
I am so pleased to announce that Congressman Mike Honda, (D-Silicon Valley) Vice Chair of the National Democratic Committee, has endorsed my re-election to the Fremont City Council!
I am extremely proud and honored to have Congressman Honda's support and endorsement. He has been an extraordinary leader for California. His extensive public service as a former San Jose Planning Commissioner, San Jose School Board Member, and Santa Clara County Supervisor brings years of experience and awareness that has benefited our area. I look forward to continued collaboration with Congressman Honda on key issues and opportunities that will benefit Fremont.
"I am pleased to endorse Sue once again for Fremont City Council. I have enjoyed working with her on a number of critical issues of mutual interest and look forward to continuing to do so. Her can-do spirit and genuine dedication to serving a population as diverse as Fremont's are timeless qualities that the City Council will continue benefiting from as it addresses an array of local challenges -- we are lucky to have Sue in Fremont."
Congressman Honda, of San Jose, was first elected to the Congress in 2000 and prior to that served many years in the California State Assembly. A strong advocate for working families, education, and racial equality, the Congressman is well regarded in the House of Representatives for his strong work ethic. He is a member of the Asian Pacific American Caucus and many key committees. He recently founded the Congressional Anti-Bullying Caucus. Due to redistricting, his 17th Congressional district will include Fremont beginning in January 2013.
Elected Officials who attended included:
On June 22, 2012 over 100 guests and dignitaries gathered to support Sue Chan's bid for re-election to Fremont City Council.
Sue handily won her first bid for Council in 2008 and became the first Chinese American woman to be elected to Fremont.
It was very impressive the number of supporters, especially API elected officials from all over the Bay area, came to support her.
